VFRW White House Coordinator
Convention Report

April 2008

For nearly eight years I have served as the VFRW White House Coordinator.  It has been a long, but very rewarding experience.  The White House volunteers have spent many hours addressing letters in the Greetings Office; answering the phones on the Comment Lines from people located all over the world; reading letters sent to President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush from small children, senior citizens, and every other age group; and reading e-mail, that was just instituted a few years ago, but is an important venue for communication with the White House.  Volunteers perform all of these duties with dedication and skill, helping the President’s staff in any way that they can.  The funding cost of volunteers to the administration is zero because the volunteers do not receive pay for their time or reimbursement for their travel and other expenses, but the cost to the individual volunteer is not insignificant.  Many spend long hours commuting just to get to the office.  Some even fly from other states to volunteer.  Now, that expenditure of effort is commitment!  The fact that there are so many volunteers who take their own time away from their families and their “day jobs,” shows that they, as White House Volunteers, are highly committed to helping and listening to people whom they do not know and will never meet.  We are all working to help our fellow Americans no matter who they are, how young or old, where they live, how much money they have, or what race or color they may be.  I assure you there are times on the lines that my heart was broken just to hear what another human being is facing in their lives; but there have been just as many calls that simply make you laugh so hard that it brings tears to your eyes.  Oh yes, volunteering in any organization can be hard on a person at times, but the fact that you know in your heart that you have made a difference in another person’s life is more of a blessing then you can ever imagine.  I, for one, have had more blessings then I could ever imagine working as a White House volunteer.  The people I have met and the things I have learned are more then I could have dreamed when growing up as a child.

Yes, volunteering is so very important to the world today and especially in these times.  Even if, as a volunteer, you feel that you can only do very little to help, remember that it may make all the difference in the world to that child, senior, or whomever, that someone is there to read their letter, address a greeting card, or listen to their story on the Comment Lines.

I thank you for the opportunity to serve as the VFRW White House Coordinator for the past eight years.

God bless all our members who give of themselves unselfishly to volunteer for The White House.

Blessings to all,
Cheryl Snyder
