Project Ideas

Initiate a cooperative activity with a local library, day care center or school.  Possible activities include reading to groups or tutoring students.

Donate a subscription to NEWS FOR YOU, a news magazine for teenagers and adults who are new readers by contacting (800) 448-8878 or nrp@laubach.org.

Give the gift of a book to each baby born in your community.  For larger cities, pick a doctor and volunteer to provide books during a special week.

Get involved with Reach Out and Read (ROR), a national pediatric literacy program and project advocated by First Lady Laura bush.  For more information, contact (617) 629-8042 or visit www.reachoutanread.org.

The Literacy Committee strongly recommends participation in the Dictionary Project.  Visit www.dictionaryproject.org for more details.

Details

In 2002, the NFRW Literacy Committee launched NFRW Literacy Month.  Each year, local clubs have the opportunity to share their projects, ranging from book donations, tutoring and financial support of literacy programs to special one-time events like themed parties with authors.  This year's them is "Readers Become Leaders."

For more information about Literacy Month, contact the VFRW Literacy Chairman Sandy Gates; or NFRW Committee Chair Carol Meny at agmeny@aol.com.

NFRW Literacy Committee

In 2006 for the first time, all NFRW literacy activities were combined under one umbrella. The goal of the Literacy Committee is to continue the current programs and enhance the NFRW’s participation in literacy promotion by adding programs as opportunities are presented.

NFRW Literacy Committee programs include:

Mamie Eisenhower Library Project (MELP)

MELP is the NFRW’s oldest literacy program, celebrating 45 years of book donations from an approved list to schools and libraries. Bookplates are mailed to clubs upon receipt of the list of books to be donated. This enables the committee to track the numbers and names of books being donated by Republican women across the country.

Additions to the MELP list are made periodically and we gladly accept recommendations from members.

The Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries

The First Lady’s Foundation created the Gulf Coast School Library Recovery Initiative to rebuild school libraries in the hurricane devastated Gulf Coast. As soon as it was announced the NFRW Literacy Committee endorsed it and encouraged members to become involved.  Find more information at www.laurabushfoundation.org.

Please visit the NFRW web site or contact any member of the Literacy Committee for additional information.

The NFRW Literacy Committee strives to sponsor and support a variety of programs and we hope there is at least one to fit each NFRW club, regardless of club size or location. We sincerely believe our motto – Readers Become Leaders.

Carol J. Meny

Chairman, NFRW Literacy Committee
