  Contacting your Representative or Senator

These tips were provided by Brenda Campbell at the October 21, 2006 VFRW Board Meeting.

  • The opening sentence, or a subject line, must indicate the specific issue of concern. For a subject line, place "SUBJECT: ________".  On the second line below the salutation name the exact legislation and use the bill number for identification.
  • Indicate that you are a voting resident of the state or district when you are writing.

  • Be sure that your letter is brief and to the point.  Try to keep correspondence to one page or less and ONLY ONE ISSUE in a letter.  (If your letter covers more than one issue, they will dilute one another.)

  • Make sure you state exactly what you want your Representative or Senator to do, and ask for their support on the issue.

  • Thank your legislator for taking the time to consider your views.

  • To make your letter effective, you must make sure that the legislator, or their aide for the particular issue sees and understands your message.

  • BE CERTAIN THAT YOU ARE USING THE CORRECT ADDRESS!
