- The opening sentence, or a
subject line, must indicate the specific issue of concern. For a
subject line, place "SUBJECT: ________". On the second line
below the salutation name the exact legislation and use the bill
number for identification.
- Indicate that you are a voting
resident of the state or district when you are writing.
- Be sure that your letter is
brief and to the point. Try to keep correspondence to one page
or less and ONLY ONE ISSUE in a letter. (If your letter covers
more than one issue, they will dilute one another.)
- Make sure you state exactly
what you want your Representative or Senator to do, and ask for
their support on the issue.
- Thank your legislator for
taking the time to consider your views.
- To make your letter effective,
you must make sure that the legislator, or their aide for the
particular issue sees and understands your message.
- BE CERTAIN THAT YOU ARE USING
THE CORRECT ADDRESS!
